Boels Zanders Belgian Desk: cultural and legislative differences
One would think that Belgians and Dutch doing business in one another’s countries would be relatively easy; we are next-door neighbours and speak practically the same language. As is often the case, however, appearances can be deceiving. Some Dutch terms have a completely different meaning in Flemish, for example. The attorneys of our Belgian Desk each have their own area of specialisation, such as employment law, trade law, construction law, or corporate law, and each is well-versed in both Dutch and Belgian law. We understand the differences between the two and can steer you away from pitfalls, cultural or otherwise. We can advise you on contracts, including employment contracts, and can help you start up your business in Belgium or the Netherlands (will you choose a Dutch or Belgian legal form?) or expand your activities (how do employment contracts work for employees transferred to the neighbouring country? Do your general terms and conditions still apply across the border? What about foreign real estate purchases?).

A few of the matters our Belgian Desk can help you with:

  • Cross-border financing, securities, and insolvencies
  • Cross-border procurements and construction projects
  • Trade contracts, mergers, and acquisitions
  • Cross-border employment issues and contracts
  • Succession law and matrimonial property law for Dutch-Belgian couples

International network
Boels Zanders has a large network of Belgian attorneys who specialise in the areas of law that are relevant to you as a business owner. If necessary, we can refer you to one of our network partners, who are always people we know, who deliver quality, and who are knowledgeable about the specific issue you have to deal with. We remain indirectly involved after referral so we always know what’s happening with our clients, even across the border.
